Cases of Cyclosporiasis reached almost 12,000 across 41 states according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in its weekly surveillance data update on Tuesday. Due to reporting lags between the time people get sick and when cases are reported, the numbers are likely to continue to rise.
As of Tuesday, the CDC reported 4,173 laboratory-confirmed domestic cases and is aware of 7,400 additional cases that do not yet require further investigation and analysis.
Michigan has the highest concentration of cases by far, with the state’s Department of Health and Human Services reporting 7,171 cases since June 22nd, including 102 hospitalizations.
On Sunday, the FDA reported that a test that had detected the Cyclospora parasite on a sample of iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms in Mexico was a false positive. On Monday, the agency clarified that this only applies to one specific shipment, and the false positive does not change its prior conclusions that linked the outbreak to Taylor Farms shredded lettuce.
FDA’s traceback investigation and outbreak data continue to converge on shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms locations in central Mexico. FDA will continue to work with federal and state partners to investigate this multistate outbreak and ensure products implicated in this outbreak have been removed from the market,” the FDA stated.
In an article titled “What the Cyclospora Outbreak Reveals,” The New York Times wrote that experts have said that it’s plausible that global warming could contribute to an increase in Cyclospora illnesses as higher temperatures extend the spring and summer seasons, providing a better environment for the pathogen to grow. It also cited past statements by experts who theorized that heavy rainfall could cause human waste to seep into irrigation water, contaminating crops.
“Whether or not this outbreak was directly linked to climate change, we know that warming is expected to fuel the spread of a wide variety of food-borne pathogens. And the current episode has exposed potential vulnerabilities in public health detection systems at a time when the need for accurate monitoring of the food supply is only growing more important.”
It is typically spread by contaminated irrigation water that makes contact with fresh produce that then ends up on grocery store shelves or on plates at restaurants.
In a June 2025 Rootwurks article, Lewis H. Ziska, PhD, an associate professor at Columbia University, broke down how extreme weather events sparked by climate change can harm food safety in particular where agricultural products like lettuce are grown.
"If you have a drought and water is difficult to come by, and you have to use water that is contaminated. Then that may be a source of salmonella, or it may be a source of listeria, or it may be a source of some other pathogens that can contaminate your food, even if the food looks good,” Ziska said.
He also highlighted how flooding can cause runoff to pollute the water supply.
“One of the issues is not just that the temperature will be more suitable for greater exposure but that the change in climate will have a direct effect in terms of moving these pathogens around so that they can contaminate the food while it's still in the field before it's even been picked.”
Citing federal staffing cuts at government agencies responsible for food safety, Ziska added “You have this juxtaposition between greater threats that are already occurring and are certainly gonna be exacerbated in the future with climate, and at the same time, our ability to meet that challenge to make sure that the food is safe, is under threat.”
On Wednesday, the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health published an article stating that gaps in America’s food safety systems have left consumers more vulnerable.
The article quotes Dave Love, PhD, a research professor at the Center for a Livable Future, who said that the erosion of food safety staff, funding, and surveillance has reduced opportunities to identify the outbreak’s source and stop its spread.
“Cuts to food safety make the food system more susceptible to these types of outbreaks,” Love said.
Johns Hopkins also quoted Kellogg J. Schwab, PhD, the Abel Wolman Professor in Environmental Health and Engineering, who said that coordination between state and federal agencies has been degraded, staffing has been reduced, and what is left is a patchwork of state-led efforts and an industrialized food supply chain that spreads localized contamination nationwide.
“It’s an efficient way to produce lettuce at a large scale. It’s also a very efficient way to spread disease,” Schwab said.

The Cyclosporiasis outbreak is one of the most widely reported food safety crises in recent years. And the impact on the industry has been swift.
Data has shown that foot traffic at Taco Bell sank nearly 19% last Friday compared to its day-of-the-week average in 2026, while shares of Taco Bell’s parent company Yum Brands dipped by around 10% over two weeks.
And despite the false positive result, Taylor Farms and Taco Bell parent Yum Brands are still navigating the reputational fallout of an outbreak that prompted product removals and widespread headlines.
While bigger brands like Taco Bell are at the center of the headlines, the fallout from such a crisis hits food companies across the industry.
Cyclospora is a unique challenge for food safety teams.
